Biogas Chiller

Biogas Chiller – Efficient Cooling Solution for Biogas Plants and Gas Processing Systems

In modern energy production, efficiency and process control are essential. Biogas plants are increasingly used across industries such as agriculture, wastewater treatment, food processing, and renewable energy generation. However, one important factor that directly affects biogas quality and processing efficiency is temperature control.

During the biogas generation and purification process, gas temperature often rises due to biological reactions and compression stages. If the temperature remains high, moisture, impurities, and contaminants remain mixed with the gas, reducing its efficiency and quality. For this reason, industries use a Biogas Chiller to cool the gas and remove moisture before further processing.

A Biogas Chiller is an industrial cooling system designed to reduce the temperature of biogas during compression or purification stages. By lowering the gas temperature, moisture condenses and separates from the gas, resulting in cleaner and more efficient fuel.

Proper cooling improves the overall performance of the biogas plant and protects downstream equipment such as compressors, generators, and gas treatment systems

What Is a Biogas Chiller?

A Biogas Chiller is a specialized industrial chiller used to cool biogas during the gas treatment process. In a typical biogas plant, gas produced from anaerobic digestion contains methane, carbon dioxide, moisture, and small amounts of impurities.

Before the gas can be used in engines, turbines, or purification systems, it must be cooled to remove moisture and stabilize the gas composition. The chiller performs this task by circulating chilled fluid through a heat exchanger where the hot biogas passes.

As the gas temperature drops, water vapor condenses into liquid form and is separated from the gas stream. This process significantly improves the efficiency of the biogas system.

Because of this cooling process, the gas becomes cleaner, drier, and more suitable for energy generation.

Biogas chillers are commonly used in:

✅ Biogas purification plants

✅ Biomethane production units
✅ Wastewater treatment plants
✅ Agricultural biogas plants
✅ Landfill gas processing systems

Advantages of Using a Biogas Chiller

Industrial biogas plants require stable temperature control to operate efficiently. Installing a properly designed biogas chiller offers multiple benefits.

One

Improved Gas Quality: Cooling the gas helps remove moisture and impurities, which significantly improves gas quality. As a result, methane concentration remains stable and energy output increases.

Two

Protection of Equipment High moisture content in gas can damage compressors and engines. However, when gas is cooled and dried, equipment life increases and maintenance costs reduce.

Three

Higher Energy Efficiency Clean and dry biogas burns more efficiently. Therefore, generators and turbines operate at higher efficiency levels.

Four

Reduced Corrosion Risk: Moisture in gas pipelines can lead to corrosion and leakage. By removing condensate, the chiller protects pipelines and process equipment.

Five

Stable Plant Operation: Temperature control helps maintain consistent gas composition. Consequently, the entire biogas system runs more smoothly without sudden performance fluctuations.

Six

Essential for Gas Purification Systems Biogas purification processes such as CO₂ removal and biomethane upgrading require controlled temperature conditions. A chiller ensures the gas enters these systems at the correct temperature.

Process of Biogas Chiller System

“The operation of a biogas chiller system is simple yet highly effective. The cooling cycle continuously reduces gas temperature and removes moisture before the gas enters further processing units.”

✅ Step 1: Hot Biogas from Digester or Compressor
Initially, biogas generated in the digester or compression stage exits at a relatively high temperature. This gas contains methane, carbon dioxide, and water vapor.

✅ Step 2: Gas Flow Through Heat Exchanger
Next, the hot gas enters a heat exchanger connected to the chiller system. Inside the heat exchanger, chilled fluid flows through coils or plates.

✅ Step 3: Heat Transfer Process
During this stage, heat from the biogas transfers to the chilled fluid circulating in the chiller system. Consequently, the gas temperature begins to decrease.

✅ Step 4: Moisture Condensation

As the gas cools, water vapor condenses into liquid droplets. These droplets collect in a moisture separator or condensate trap.

✅ Step 5: Condensate Removal
The condensed water is automatically drained from the system. Therefore, the gas becomes significantly drier.

✅ Step 6: Clean and Dry Biogas Output
Finally, the cooled gas exits the system with lower moisture content and stable temperature. This clean gas can now move to purification units or energy generation equipment.

The entire cycle runs continuously, ensuring efficient gas treatment.

How to Calculate Biogas Chiller Capacity (TR)

✅ Bio Gas Plant Chiller – TR Capacity Calculation (As per Example Image)

Biogas chillers are used to cool hot biogas and remove moisture before purification, compression, or power generation. Correct TR calculation ensures proper gas cooling and stable plant operation.

✅ Given Data
Biogas Flow Rate = 6000 Nm³/hr
Gas Inlet Temperature = 40°C
Required Gas Outlet Temperature = 15°C
Specific Heat of Biogas ≈ 0.6 kcal/kg°C

✅ Step 1 — Calculate Temperature Difference (ΔT)

ΔT = Inlet Gas Temperature − Required Gas Temperature

ΔT = 40 − 15 = 25°C

This represents the temperature reduction required for proper gas cooling.

✅ Step 2 — Calculate Heat Load

Heat Load = Gas Flow × Specific Heat × ΔT

Heat Load = 6000 × 0.6 × 25

Heat Load = 90,000 kcal/hr

✅ Step 3 — Convert Heat Load into TR

1 TR = 3024 kcal/hr

TR = Heat Load ÷ 3024

TR = 90,000 ÷ 3024

TR ≈ 29.76 TR

Rounded Value ≈ 30 TR

✅ Step 4 — Add Safety Factor (20%)

To compensate for heat gain, compressor heat, and continuous plant operation:

Required TR = 30 + 20% ≈ 36 TR

✅ Final Chiller Selection for Biogas Plant

👉 Recommended Biogas Chiller Capacity = 35–40 TR

This ensures efficient gas cooling, proper moisture removal, and reliable biogas purification performance.
